paragraph 3
You might think elephants are just big wrinkly grey creatures but there is a lot more to an elephant than that! There are two main types of elephants, the African elephant and the Asian elephant, but there are many other subspecies for both of the elephants. The African elephant has 2 subspecies, the African Bush Elephant and the African Forest Elephant. The Asian Elephant on the other hand has 4 subspecies. They are the Indian Elephant, the Sri Lankan Elephant, Sumatran Elephant, and the Borneo Elephant. African adult elephants are about 13 feet tall and around 14,000 pounds heavy, while the African adult female is about 9 feet tall, and around 10,000 pounds heavy. While African elephants are tall and heavy like that you would think that Asian elephants would be the same, but the Asian elephants are the smaller of the two species. Asian adult males are 10 feet tall, and around 11,000 pounds heavy, while the Asian adult female is 8 feet tall, and around 9,000 pounds heavy. There are many ways you can tell the two species apart. The one easier way is the ears. The African elephant's ears are bigger in size than the Asian elephants. Scientists believe this is because they live in hotter climates, so if their ears are bigger they can flap them to get more air. Another way to tell them apart is the harder way because you have got to look closely on the elephant. The next way to tell them apart is to look at their trunks. The African elephants have two “fingers” to manipulate with. While on the other hand Asian elephants only have one “finger” to manipulate with. Asian elephant though have one very interesting feature that the African elephants don’t have, a very large “bump” on their heads. The “bump” on their heads is the tallest point on their body. Although they both have different features, they both share something in common, neither of the species can jump! This is due to how their legs are built. Elephant legs are short and stubby, to support the massive weight of these creatures. Elephants toes are buried in the flesh of their feet and not all of the toes have toenails. The bottom of their feet is made of tough fat tissue so they can walk more quietly. One of their feet is half the width of the elephants shoulder, so scientists can tell the size of an elephant by just looking at the footprint. Now let’s take a look at the mouth of an elephant. All of and elephants teeth are made from ivory. They have 26 teeth in total with 24 of them being molars in the mouth, and 2 of them being the tusks. The teeth of an elephant replace themselves 6 times during their lives, and every time they replace each other the new teeth end up being a little larger than the old ones. The tusks they use for digging, fighting, and moving objects. African elephants use their tusks during times of drought to dig water holes in dry river beds. On the other hand Asian elephants don’t use their tusks as much because they can find water year round. Asian elephant adult females have pint sized tusks or no tusks at all. Elephants have wrinkled brown or grey skin. An African elephant has more wrinkled skin than Asian elephants because they live in hotter climates. So now you know all about elephants and what they eat, where they live and a description of them.
